Post SMB keeps shuting down after about a minute
Hello everyone!

I am new to linux and WAS a window user. boy am i glad i switched, but still have lots to learn. Any who, currently i am working on a server for some residents at my current job. I have DNS and everything setup right and it is working. Samba on the other hand is configured right but it keeps shutting down after about a minute. When i run this command:

chksmb status

it says "Dead". Ill restart the service(rcsmb start), and keep checking the status, and after about a minute it shuts down again. I have done a restart, double checked my configurations and still cant find why this is happening. (config file somewhere?)

Now since im new, im not sure what info any of you would need to help me out, so please chime in, if there is a specific file or info you need to know, please let me know and ill try my best to get it. thanks so much in advance for the help and suggestions!!

Welcome to opensuse.us tbattista1 B-) B-) B-)
Don't know if I can help as I do not use Samba.
If I did, I would use Yast to start it. Here is 2 ways to try and do it.

1. For all was on, go to Yast => System => System Services (run level)
find and start Samba, then save run level settings.(finish)

2. For automatic on when needed ( the more reliable method )
go to Yast => Network Services => Network Services (xinetd)
Start xinetd if not running, find and enable Samba as a service.
xinetd will listen for Samba requests and start Samba as required.

thanks you so much for your reply. Yours is the first post anywhere that actually lead me someplace that i haven't tried before.

One issue though. I looked in the network services part and smb was not a listed service. i think i configured the new service correctly, but it still does the same thing. rcsmb status, it says dead. then i tell it to run using rcsmb start, then a minute later it will go to a status of dead again :( Is it possible that something in the OS is broken?

Did you install Samba using Yast's software management tool?

Hi there.

For several times I've followed this tutorial
http://en.opensuse.org/Howto_setup_SUSE ... _Samba_PDC
And for the better part, at least the part of getting samba to work, it works.
I hope you can solve your problems.

if you want to start samba at startup, just:
chkconfig smb on
chkconfig nmb on

best of luck.
